Q20. How is Krav Maga different from other martial arts?
There are some similarities between Krav Maga and other martial arts. Yet, Krav Maga was developed in an environment where the Israeli military could not devote many hours of prolonged hand-to-hand combat training for their soldiers. Therefore, the Krav Maga System was created to bring students to a high level of skill in a relatively short period of time. There are no katas (forms) or rules in the System. Everything goes when you are fighting for your life! Krav Maga is considered a modern, highly refined street fighting system designed to be utilized against violent street attacks and sexual assaults. In short, Krav Maga has received international recognition for its highly unique and effective approach to self-defense for civilians, law enforcement, and the military. According to law enforcement trainers, among the most striking characteristics of the System are:
- Student are instructed in general defensive principles that apply to a variety of threatening scenarios.
- Students train from a realistic position of disadvantage.
- Defensive maneuvers are combined with simultaneous counterattacks to stop the attack(s) as quickly as possible.
- Violent street encounters are simulated. This is necessary to place students under stress while performing Krav Maga techniques, and to have students learn to go from a passive state to an aggressive state quickly to overcome the assault.
